Weeknote, August 1: Measurement, new music, dance battles, and engineered starvation
Work tings
You don't know what you don't know.
Which is why I loved learning the phrase "Known Unknowns" some years ago.
And, also why I developed this whole mindset around collecting data today, so you have data to play with (*cough* "learn from") 3 months from now.
BUT. And, this is a big one. I am 100% behind the actual – often misquoted – quote from Grandfather of scientific Quality Management, W. Edwards Deming: That IT IS NOT TRUE that you can only manage what you measure.
It is wrong to suppose that if you can't measure it, you can't manage it...
- W. Edwards Deming, The New Economics
Let me state it more directly, since there are too many negatives in that last sentence: You CAN manage what you can't measure. And, this is why I love qual. (That's a topic for another time.)
Personal tings
My life
- What I'm continuing to read this week: On Tyranny (I can only read 3 sections at a time, before it either feels too heavy, ominous, or makes me reflect about my life decisions and next steps.)
...Nothing is real that does not end up on the streets.
- Timothy Snyder
- But, what I've come to terms with is we just have to all be pushing for a more ethical world direction. Even in our small spaces, even if you're a working parent to multiple kids and all you can do is share and do art donations and volunteer work for your direct community. Shout-out to my cousins T., and B.
- What new thing I'm listening to: PAID IN MEMORIES
Jessie Reyez sings like how you want to be loved.
Favourites from this week's listening time:
a. CUDN'T BE ME
b. Apple Juice
c. ROOF
- Got to watch Toonie Thursday's Afro Dance Battle. What. A. Great. Event. (I wanted to upload a video, but it's exceeding my upload limit. I'll likely upload to Youtube).
World life
💔 every day.
Living everyday life (go to work, take care of my kid on summer break...) and wondering what an everyday human can do to stop a ruthless government from massacring another nation's residents.
